The replica farmhouse

A replica of Eirík and Thjóðhild´s farmhouse has been build on the eastern part of Stóra-Vatnshorn, some 100 m from the ruins. It is a conjectural reconstructins of a Settlement Age farmstead, with its layout, outlines of walls, entrance and long fireplace based on findingd from the excavated ruins.

The farmhouse was build on a local initiative with assistance from an advisory committee of atchaeologists from the National Museum.

The Structure of the building was based on the oldest known types form Iceland as well as studies made both in Iceland and neighbouring contries. Panelling is used for the interior and the ceiling has rafters and brushwood lining, with a triple layer of turf to form the roof. The walls are turf-built using clups with twine between them, probably the orginal building technique as revealed during excavation.

All the timber used is driftwood. The house was built using models og Settlement Age tools which were reconstructed based on archaeological finds or ancient descriptions. In the texture the tiber resembles the orginal and the all the carvings and decoration are based on models from the same time.
